Honors and AP Program

The Honors & Advanced Placement Program

Stanton's Honors Program is a rigorous academic program where all of the Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics courses are either Honors or Advanced Placement. In an annual survey that the National Association for College Admission Counseling conducts, The Admission Trends Survey, the category that consistently ranks at the top of desirable characteristics of high school students is "Grades In College Prep Courses." With that thought in mind, Stanton's Honors students prepare themselves for the rigor of college curriculums as well as college admissions through the Honors Program. Course registration and the scheduling process involves choices of electives that will lead to majors. A "major" is defined as 3 or more prescribed credits within an elective area of the student's choice. Honors students at Stanton typically take 9 -10 credits of electives in grades 9-12. Students will use 3 or more of these credits to fulfill major requirments. By choosing which elective area to conentrate in, or major in, the following benefits will occur:

- Once students choose their concentration, the curriculum and master schedule will be established to assure that all courses needed would be offered - students will be assured of getting the elective courses they need for their majors;
- Rather than choosing random electives to fill up their schedules, once students have declared their majprs, the electives that they need will be available for them
- Students will be able to take more than the minimum required 3 credits, if desired, in order to delve further into the major area.

All departments at Stanton have a progression for a major within their departments. See the complete list here. When students register for their courses, their registration forms will contain an area to choose the major.
